Caution: Watch This Heat!

After several days of 90 humid degree temperature we must caution our run with the following:

1- Run in morning or evening.
2- Sun Block 60 or better.
3- Wear a wide brim hat.
4- Increase water in-take.
5- Break down your run into two shorter runs.

Most important: Listen to your Body! This is not the time to be tough. It is the time to be smart and cautious. We're in this for the long hall. We're not interested in permanent damages to our bodies from a heat-stroke!

Stick with your program!
Even if you must set the clock for 2 AM to avoid the heat!

You will not regret it on the first Sunday in November!

Pick Up The Pace.

How is your running program going for you?

I have a training feature that has helped many runners establish their track-time.

I am a big proponent to running at a slow, relaxed pace, and I still believe in that approach, but some of you who want to work on “development” can “move it up a notch”, by “picking up the pace”.

During your runs you can work on strength and stamina by “opening-up” and doing sprints.

If you run on a track you can use the “straight-aways” to “sprint”.

Just run as fast as you can, like you will miss your “non-refundable flight”, as hard as you can and for as long as you can.

Only you can determine how long and hard that will be, but I promise you, you will see results.

On the “curved ends” of the track you can slow-down, or “float”, at your normal pace.

Add this method during your runs and you will discover you are a better runner than you thought.

Good Luck!

Open Up and Connect With Life Around You.

The Origin of the Marathon comes from the story how a herald named Phidippides ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory.

Notice Phidippides didn’t take a bus, cab or train?

Running is our natural form of transportation. Through technological advances (and laziness) we no longer rely on our true method for traveling modest distances.

Running is not just exercising our bodies. Running is our tool, and we need to use our tools to be true to our nature.

Enjoy this natural, and seldom used, state of being. Your body is functioning as it was meant to be used.

Connect your energy with all living beings around you. Trees, birds, and people. This will not only solidify your natural state of being, it will also fuel your energy.

Practice this. It will be useful and necessary on Marathon Sunday.

My first Marathon, I ran into trouble after the first 90 minutes. Since my training involved 90 minute runs, my body was ready to stop.

I realized I needed help, fast! Panic was setting in.

I was helped by slapping the out-stretched hands of the children lining the course. I immediately felt stronger, where I was feeling weak.

I fueled my energy with the passion and energy of the children. God Bless them!

You can, too.

Long Runs - Good Runs !

Put on your hat and shades.

Grab your iPod.

Go out on the road and shake it.

You run long and deep into a therapeutic, hypnotic state.

Breathe.

You want to go far away from home.

Be as anonymous and as unnoticeable as a bird.

Get lost in the flow of nature or the sea of humanity.

Clear your mind of speed, time or where you need to go.

You put your back against your starting point and move. Slow or fast, it’s not important. You just want to keep moving.

Observe and soak in your exploration.

This is your world that is going on around you.

This is what you are missing when sitting at home on the couch.

Enjoy your talent, your skill, your strength, your commitment.

You are a Marathon Runner.

Peace.

Good Luck!

Watch Out for Those Potholes!

I saw it last night.

She stepped into a pothole and never came out.

She crumpled to the ground, reaching for the ankle that we all just heard, “pop”.

I didn't know her.

I was just running by.

I stopped to "help", but that was a pathetic effort.

There was absolutely nothing anyone could do.

The damage was done.

This occurred on York Ave and 73rd St. Be Warned!

It is an incredibly sobering experience to see a healthy, youthful mother taken out by an inexcusable “urban-landmine”.

We must be cautious and keep our peripherals focused at all times, so we can avoid injury.

So if you notice hazardous obstacles during your run, change your course. Find one without those dangerous challenges.

Good Luck!

Destroying our Self-Imposed Barricades.

I ran the beach in Rockaway Beach, Sunday and it was awesome!

Two months ago I began my training, running the beach of Kauai, on the Pacific Ocean.

Two weeks ago I ran St. Pete’s Beach, on the Gulf of Mexico.

As I did upon completing my runs on my vacations, I wanted to jump in and enjoy cooling off with a swim.

Though the weather was in the 90’s yesterday, the Atlantic Ocean temperature was very cold.

Water temperature in Hawaii and Florida is never a problem, but NYC in April is another story.

I immediately thought of the “Polar Bears” who swim Coney Island every New Year’s Day. A few years ago, they consisted of a few “lunatics”, since then their numbers have increased by several thousand.

This is very similar to the history of the NYC Marathon – started with a few “lunatics” running four loops around Central Park – evolving into a few hundred thousand, each year applying for an entry number to run through the five boroughs.

We must question and destroy our self-imposed barricades. Which is why, after I completed my two hour run yesterday, I did jump into the “Freezing Cold” Atlantic Ocean! I was celebrating being alive!

Or else I am just another “lunatic”.

Good Luck!

Progress 277 lbs – Lost 62 lbs in 7 Weeks !

I’m feeling great! In the past 2 months, I have run:

- On the beaches in Kauai,
- Two days later – a blizzard in NYC,
- Several Ice Storms.
- A Tornado in Florida.
- And some unpredictable weather here in NYC.

I’m also 62 pounds lighter and loving life.

- I’m more productive.
- I’m more enthusiastic.
- I’m more energetic.

I am currently finishing a set of sit-ups.
Then off for a 7 mile run through Central Park.

Finishing, with a Strong Leg Workout at The Equinox.
Good Luck!
